15th July 2010

Had a call with mr stewart today.

And in the first paragraph I will discuss briefly...

How the Weimar was initially happy with him- cause of his successes in Poland, France, etc.
And how it went bad with the Russian Campaign- Battle of Stalingrad.
And also in July 1944.

I will add some various view points from people like his general staff, common soldiers and how he is perceived now.

So basically how he was perceived during his time in C-in-C... like when the war was going well for Germany he was perceived as a hero...

With the changing of the question- the option under which my question has also changed...it is now Option 1- Individuals in History

14th July 2010

Busy history day for me!! just updated the bibligraphy. Done a separate one for the new question. Am still using some of the books from the old bibliography as it as details on Hitler.

14th July 2010- Introduction

Many historians perceive Adolf Hitler’s leadership of the Nazi Party to be a, “fundamental influence on the course and nature of the [Second World] war” Dic P. 538, especially after 1938 when he appointed himself as the Commander in Chief among other positions until 1945 when he committed suicide in a Berlin bunker. Initially, Hitler’s ideas including the blitzkrieg method of attack was highly successful for the Nazis with the army conquering numerous central European countries such as Poland, Norway, France and Denmark between 1939 and 1940. Hitler appointed himself as the Commander in Chief after being disappointed with the efforts of the previous commander, Field Marshal Blomberg. Moreover, with Hitler’s new title and power he was now, “totally responsible for the conduct of the war; a powerful and organised nation was at the mercy of one man’s will” Bio P 88. As a result of Hitler becoming the commander in chief, the Second World War broke out in Europe in 1939 even after he stated in 1937 that, “whoever lights the torch of war in Europe can wish for nothing but chaos” http://www.secondworldwar.co.uk/ahitler.html. Prior to the Second World War, Hitler assumed many other positions and passed laws until he was, essentially in complete control of Germany; and he used this power to build the Nazi Regime and to equip the German armed forces for battle. However, Hitler and the Nazis power began to crumble in 1942 to 1943 with the Battle of Stalingrad which saw the first major defeat of the Nazi army, which was a result of Hitler, “avoid[ing] all contact with reality” Bio P. 89, and making judgements and decisions based on idealistic views. Thus, Hitler was a very influential personality of the Second World War and initially led the Nazi Party to many successes after he appointed himself as Commander in Chief.

the first part of the introduction....hasnt been drafted yet. Excuse the referencing in there...will be done later. comments welcome...Is it too narrative???

14 July 2010

Apologies, forgot to write that I found some pretty cool tables and stuff which I would photocopy and place in the blog but our printer/scanner is down at the moment :(

14 July 2010

Just seriously bashing through the reading at the moment. Worked all today on it and planning to start my essay today, leaving the first paragraph for the moment until I have a chat with mr Stewart regarding exactly what I should be putting in there.

In answering mr stewarts comment on my last post- Hitlers changing role in C in C is becoming more evident, with him gradually taking full control over everything (economically and regarding the army). And especially looking at the Battle of Stalingrad, which was the first major defeat for the Nazi army in 1943.
It is also becoming evident from reading that as the second world war progesses you can see that his mental stability is also changing as Hitler suspects everyone to be against his ideas and will not listen to them, even if it is the best thing for the Nazi army at that stage.

Next step, is to begin writing. Sat down to start writing this morning, but felt I needed to do more reading so went through it all. So will do that now, found a great book on various historians views of Hitler and his leadership which will obviously help greatly with the historiography side of things :)

5th July

Just been doing some reading on Hitler's role in Commander in Chief.

Spoke to Mr Stewart, focussing on the question of; to what extent was Hitler a success as the C in C when he took over the active direction of World War 2?

Introduction- a brief outline on his rise to power.

P1-Why he began to exercise this power and the changes he made (but not going into the 1930's- so basically from 1938 when he appointed himself as Commander in Chief- until the beginning of the Second World War)

P2- The successes of Germany initially, eg them invading multiple countries in a short amount of time.

P3- The downfall of the Nazi Regime and Hitler's eventual suicide in 1945.

Conclusion.

The next step from here is to continue reading, probably another trip to the Barr Smith and then start writing. My aim is to have the whole essay written by the end of these holidays so next term I can focus on refining it and also make it less stressful for me, due to many other assignments due at the same time. But all is good, feeling a lot better about the essay now! :)
